Excursions with a personal guide in Athens

Once the most powerful city in Ancient Greece, it still embodies the spirit of the goddess after whom it was named. Many history lovers and archaeologists dream of a lifetime of excursions to Athens. If you are lucky to visit the homeland of democracy, theater and the entire Western civilization, get the support of an English-speaking guide to understand the versatile cultural heritage of this unusual city.

An experienced tour guide will reveal the history of Athens through unique architectural monuments, will show the most picturesque urban landscapes. A sightseeing tour with a personal guide usually starts with a visit to the Acropolis, the sacral pearl of Greece with the ruins of ancient temples erected in honor of Athens, Zeus, Hephaestus. Their majestic white columns seem to float above the city, giving travelers the opportunity to appreciate its divine perfection. Besides this symbol of classical architecture, excursion programs in English include a number of other sights:

  • National Archaeological Museum that preserves artifacts of ancient Greek, Kikladian, Mycenaean and Egyptian cultures;
  • Roman Square with the Tower of the Winds, the 12-meter-high peak of which was once crowned by a sensitive weather vane.
  • Kerameikos – Hellenic necropolis where legendary rulers, philosophers, warlords rest;
  • Mount Lycabettus – the best observation point in town, overlooking its main treasure – Acropolis.

While in Athens, try to find time to do the following things:

  • take a tour inside the Syntagma Square subway station (aka Constitution Square), displaying artifacts discovered during the construction of the underground road – from pre-Christian plumbing to the remains of extinct animals;
  • watch the guard change in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Parliament building: every Sunday at 11 a.m., the Evzone guardsmen of the zone in parade clothes (i.e. pleated skirts and pompom shoes) perform a carefully choreographed ceremony;
  • stroll along the alleys of Anafiotica, a 19th century village descending from the northern slope of the Acropolis, which served as a shelter for refugees from the Cycladic island of Anafi (this cozy oasis in the heart of the crowded Athens will allow you to relax and dream alone);
  • sunbathe on one of the white sandy beaches with charming taverns and a stunning hilly backround where time slows down to one golden hour.

Excurzilla advises to go to Athens in August-September, when hotel prices start to decrease and the streets become quieter. Some tourists prefer to visit this city in winter to enjoy its beauty in an idyllic setting of peace.
