In the Greek city of Kerkyra, it is worth seeing first of all the Paleo-Fruryo and Neo-Fruryo fortresses, whose names (paleo – old, neo – new) are slightly misleading: in fact, these buildings have come down to us from the hoary antiquity, the Byzantines began to build them in the middle of the XII century, 100 years before the Venetians began to erect a new citadel. Then both forts were repeatedly completed and rebuilt by new invaders and rulers, the latest addition is a shrine in the neoclassical style: the British built the Church of St. George (St. George) in the middle of Paleo Frurio in the 1840s.
The old fortress was built by the Venetians, and for a long time gradually lost its appearance. Now the Paleo Frurio has been restored, although not all buildings have survived to this day. The fortress is one of the visiting cards of the island. All kinds of cultural events are often held here. The fortress itself is a powerful bastion built to protect the island. On the territory of the fortress there is a church, museums, barracks, there are guns.
Most of all, tourists are impressed by the thick fortress walls and the view of the island from the very top. You can only climb up on foot and it's somewhat difficult to do it physically, so it's better to go to the sights in the morning, when it's not so hot in Corfu yet, and take a bottle of water with you. You can look around some rooms of the fortress and see what thick walls the fortress has.
We strongly advise you not to be lazy and climb to the highest point of the fortress (not a very heavy climb), from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire city of Kerkyra.
Getting to the Old Fortress will not be difficult if you travel around the island in a rented car from https://bookingcar.eu/en/corfu.... Depart from the capital of the island by highway No. 24, 25. The road will take about 40 minutes.
The entrance fee is 8 euros, discounts are provided for children and pensioners over 65 years old, for this price you will not only enjoy the beautiful views, but also visit the museums located in the fortress.
